“The Arctic is our area of national interests and strategic interests,” Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the US president-elect’s recent comments about seizing Greenland from Denmark.
The language used by the Russian government spokesman echoes that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who frequently uses it when discussing NATO’s historic eastward expansion… namely… “the strategic sphere of influence”… which generally means “go back on what you want to do!”
But Donald Trump has refused to rule out using military force to seize the world’s largest island, and that seems to have made Russia nervous, with the Russian government spokesman saying, “We are watching the big development here, quite closely, but so far, thank God, only statements!”
Assuming Donald Trump is unsuccessful in his quest for the island, the proposal could actually have benefits for Russia!
For one thing, it has the potential to cause a rift within NATO, as instead of fighting as one unit, they could fight among themselves (Denmark is a NATO member, and Greenland is part of it, even if it is now self-governing).
Perhaps more importantly, it expresses an expansionist policy, of the kind Russia is now pursuing in Ukraine.
Thus, it could help Russian President Vladimir Putin try to legitimize an invasion and seizure of Ukrainian territory, arguing, “If the United States wants to claim territory in the name of national security, why can’t we?”
