US President Joe Biden is preparing to issue an executive order permanently banning new offshore oil and gas development in some US coastal waters, ensuring that sensitive maritime areas are protected in his final weeks, Bloomberg reported.
The order, which is set to be issued within days, would ban the sale of new drilling rights in parts of the US Outer Continental Shelf, according to Bloomberg sources.
Such a move would certainly complicate President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitions to boost domestic oil and gas production. Unlike other executive actions that can be easily reversed, Biden’s planned proclamation is part of a 72-year-old law that gives the president broad discretion to permanently protect US waters from oil and gas leasing without explicitly empowering presidents to revoke them.
The move comes in response to pressure from Democrats in the US Congress and environmental groups, who have pressed the president to strengthen permanent protections against offshore drilling, arguing that the measure is necessary to protect vulnerable coastal communities, safeguard marine ecosystems from oil spills and combat climate change.
