The bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Artificial Intelligence released its long-awaited report this week, detailing strategies for how the United States can protect itself against emerging threats related to artificial intelligence while ensuring it remains a leader in innovation within the rapidly evolving sector.
Responses to the report, which sought to create a flexible regulatory framework for the sector, have been mixed.
A professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of New Haven told Fox News:
“The task force report provides a thoughtful and forward-looking framework that balances the transformative economic potential of AI with the urgent need to address legitimate security concerns, but there is still work to be done.”
He pointed to the importance of developing an international cooperation strategy, especially with US allies, the need for clearer prioritization among the many recommendations made, and the need for more guidance on market competition and standardization.
The Center for Artificial Intelligence Policy, a nonpartisan research organization based in Washington, issued a press release praising lawmakers for their work on the report, but the group echoed experts’ comments about the need for more detail.
“The text of the report does not provide sufficient detail about how or when these frameworks will be created, and the report lacks focus on the catastrophic risks posed by AI,” the group said after the report was released.
