NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has completed the closest approach ever made by a human-made spacecraft, coming within 3.8 million miles (6 million kilometers) of the sun’s surface.
NASA scientists received a signal from the probe late Thursday night after several days of silence as the probe passed close to the sun, and the data collected during the close approach will now help us better understand the sun.
The project is a remarkable feat of science and engineering, given the extreme heat of the sun’s surface (up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit or 982 degrees Celsius) and the radiation the probe carries as it passes through the sun’s outer atmosphere.
While 3.8 million miles may not seem like very close, compared to the 93 million miles between Earth and the sun, the probe has come very close this time.
