Finnish power grid operator Vingrid said on Thursday it had asked a Helsinki court to seize the oil tanker Eagle S, in a bid to secure the company’s claim for damages over the Estlink 2 power line cut, Reuters reported.
The undersea power line linking Finland and Estonia was damaged on December 25, 2024, along with four communications lines, with Finnish authorities boarding the tanker the next day on suspicion it had caused the damage by dragging its anchor along the seabed.
The Baltic States are on high alert after a series of undersea power line, communications links and gas pipeline outages since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
NATO said last week it would boost its presence in the region.
The Finnish energy operator said in a statement that it had asked the court to formally seize the tanker to help secure its financial claims, with further investigations at the site of the damage expected to provide more information on the extent of the damage and enable more detailed planning and scheduling of repairs.
